Minister reconsiders 3p rise in fuel duty

ISLANDERS could be spared a hike in fuel duty by a last-minute change of heart by the Council of Ministers.

A comment published on the eve of tomorrow’s Budget debate suggests that the Council of Ministers is considering accepting the proposal by Deputy Gerard Baudains to cancel their proposed three-pence-per-litre duty rise.

The 6.9% increase in fuel duty would raise around £1.4 million, but the Deputy is challenging it, saying that motorists are already contributing some £20m million in tax.

The advantage of this rise is that many people who avoid income tax here at least contribute something by these taxes and GST.

Get people on their bikes if they are poor.

  Well said. In such a small island the majority of journeys by the majority of people could easily be made on foot or by bike.

  …and people in business can pass on the additional cost to their customers, assuming that they will have many customers once the customers all become bike riding poor!

  The dis-advantage of the rise would be far greater – use your common sense, rises in the price of fuel mean an increase in everything that you buy, it’s always a good excuse anyway for the greedy business men! whinges appear about transporting the goods around that massive 9 x 5 island!!!

How gracious of senator ozouf for allowing us to use our cars now that its tipping down with rain everyday!!!

These are the same people who are going to work to pay for all these tax increases…

If there really is a god I hope he helps us all in the new year……. Because the taxpayers are going to need it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Either way it will not make much difference when the world economy picks up.
We are in the depths of a dreadful recession and oil sits at around $100 a barrel and supply is quite tight.
Coming out of it could push the price up to £1.25 a litre for vanilla unleaded, which might be enough to push the economy back under again.
No easy solutions.

I am bemused why it is so necessary to impose so much tax on transport. The Americans don’t believe in it, as it restricts freedom, enterprise and adds cost to the working man trying to earn a living.

It is also unfair in that poorer people who are unable to afford a moderen, fuel efficient car, and thus are forced to buy more petrol end up paying more tax
