TEN-YEAR-OLD Oisin McDevitt can forget turkey and all the trimmings this Christmas as he attempts to become one of the youngest people ever to climb Mount Kilimanjaro.

On 25 December, the Victoria College Prep pupil will be three days into a six-day trek up Africa’s tallest peak. If he makes the summit, he will be one of only a handful of ten-year-olds to have done so.

Tanzanian law forbids anyone under ten attempting the climb and Oison reached double figures in September.

The achievement will be all the more impressive because he is taking on the Western Breach, the toughest and most dangerous of all the trekking routes.

Oisin is attempting the challenge with his dad, experienced climber and mountaineer Fergus McDevitt, a civil engineering rope-work specialist whose day job sees him dangling from buildings, steeples and rock faces around the Island. Despite being only ten, Oisin, who plays rugby for the Jersey Rugby Club Academy, has already notched up a respectable number of mountaineering feats.
