A SHOP assistant has been hailed a hero after tracking a woman’s stolen handbag through town and holding on to the suspected thief until the police arrived.

Ryan Bridgen (29) used a piece of software installed on the woman’s mobile phone, which was in the bag along with hundreds of pounds of other belongings, to locate the handbag a few streets away and then set off to get it back.

Within an hour he was back at the 99p Store between Bath Street and Halkett Street, where the bag disappeared from just after 10 am yesterday morning, with the bag and all its contents and the suspected thief was on his way to Police Headquarters.

Both Mr Bridgen, whose father Bob owns the 99p Stores, and the woman whose bag went missing, 64-year-old Elizabeth Wood, are now urging Islanders to consider installing similar tracking software on their phones.

This is great news that Mr Bridgen was able to find Mrs Wood’s phone so easily.

However it does make you think that if it was so easy for him to track the phone, what is stopping anyone else from tracking your movements. Ie is a loved one really at work, etc.

So that’s how the wife knows what I’ve been up to, where I’ve been. I thought it was which-craft or something even more sinister, like that dark art woman’s intuition.

I have the “find my ……..” on all my i devices but I thought I would be the only one using it if I left my iPhone or iPad somewhere definitely not expecting it to save the day when my bag was nicked. I would have loved to be there when Ryan set off the alarm on my phone ~ I bet he nearly s…t himself

So, hang on a minute, if it sets off an alarm, presumambly audible, wouldn’t the reaction of any normal thief be to rip the battery out and then stamp on the phone for good measure?

At least he would still get some cash for the battery.

It only makes a noise when you press the alarm ie when the phone has stopped moving
