A FORMER Jersey football captain who had drugs worth up to a street value of £2,580 narrowly avoided a jail sentence yesterday on his 42nd birthday.

David Robert Brodie, who lifted the Muratti Vase and is also a former Island Under-21 team manager, was sentenced to 110 hours’ community service for possessing 106 grams of cannabis resin, just under 50 grams of herbal cannabis and 16 mg of cocaine.

Advocate Debbie Corbel, defending, said that the drugs were for her client’s personal use only and that it was a small amount of cocaine.
