TEN-YEAR-OLD Islander Oisin McDevitt has become the youngest person to conquer Mount Kilimanjaro via the most treacherous trekking route.

The Victoria College Prep pupil reached the summit with his dad, experienced mountaineer Fergus, on 27 December after four gruelling days in terrible weather conditions.

Battling against heavy rain which turned into driving snow above 3,000 metres, they made it to the top on the Machame route along which there is a near constant risk of rocks falling as the glacier above melts and releases rocks.

Oisin is not only the youngest person to summit via that route, but he has also become the fastest ten-year-old ever to climb the 5,864-metre peak.

Well done young man, good to see a motivated young person acheiving something like this!

Shame the reporting states the obvious;

Doh’ if he had done it in 4 months he still would have been the fastest 10 year old as he has been the only one!!!! Where do these reporters come from.

    Several ten year-olds have climbed, he was jsut the youngest ten year old. He was also the fastest ten year old. So if he took four months, he would not have been the fastest ten year-old. Get it? Probably not.

This would be a much better story for the Island if they were actually holding up a Jersey flag instead of an Irish one. I’m not from Jersey but am proud of where I live and would certainly want to represent the Island if I ever did something similar.

Well done Oisin – a great achievement at any age, as Machame (the Whiskey route…) is not the regular way up, with most taking Marangu, commonly called the Coca-Cola route.

Hopefully, the rain and cold aside, you have plenty of good memories from your experience.
