CHILDREN in conflict-ridden Syria and countries nearby where many refugees have fled will benefit from a £30,000 emergency grant by the Jersey Overseas Aid Commission.
The sum has been given by the commission to the charity UNICEF, who over the years have benefited from a total of £5 million in aid for their worldwide projects from the Island’s overseas aid bodies.
Commission chairman Senator Paul Routier said that for a long time UNICEF had provided very effective aid programmes for children and mothers in emergency situations and as part of humanitarian projects.
‘The commission has responded to an appeal for £30,000 to bring much-needed aid to children in Syria and the surrounding countries where their families are seeking refuge from the conflict,’ he said.
