Neighbour ‘appalled’ at planning reversal

A NEIGHBOUR says he is ‘appalled’ by a decision to approve plans to demolish a cottage and build three homes in Gorey after the Royal Court overturned planning permission to develop the site last year.
Christopher Blackstone said that approving the development at Camellia Cottage, Mont de Gouray, ‘made a mockery’ of the legal process after he had won his third-party planning appeal.
The chartered accountant, who lives opposite the cottage, launched his appeal after the Planning applications panel, which comprises a group of politicians, approved the plans by Antler Homes in October 2011.

It’s time that politicians stuck to politics and were not self empowered in deciding planning issues or we might have a £400,000 cycle path obliterating the old harbour wall,plastic double glazing units on historic houses or a mooted £4.8 million extra storey on the Snow Hill carpark.We have a lay planning committee of five politicians and two parish Constables delegated to act by a planning minister,all with no professional experience of planning.We have an Island Plan but it’s being ignored and brazenly misinterpreted by those who supposedly passed it.There’s no adherence to policy and no coherence in planning decisions.Sean Power as chair of the Planning Applications panel needs to understand this and he should now relieve perhaps two of his political colleagues to concentrate on politics or their parishes and replace them with lay members, perhaps retired, with either planning, architectural or heritage experience.There are such people out there.And no, I don’t live anywhere near Gorey.

Makes you wonder what a planning department is there for in the first place ! Its hardly in the same league as when a sentenced prisoner finds new evidence in his favour and gets a retrial !

Planning decisions should be taken away from central Government and passed to the parocial authorities to deal with.

It seems like this issue has been rumbling on for years. I’m not sure I fully understand – so the Court overturned the original approval but the plans have now been approved for a second time? Presumably that option was open to the Planning Minister following the original decision?
