TWO prominent Kenyan nationals will be extradited to Jersey to face charges of laundering millions of pounds through Island banks.

Former head of the Kenya Power and Lighting Company Samuel Gichuru and the country’s former Finance Minister, Crysanthus Okemo, are accused of accepting millions of pounds in bribes from companies interested in contracts in Kenya’s energy industry.

The Island’s authorities have been fighting since early 2011 to get the pair extradited to Jersey to face the charges but until recently the case was stalled in the Kenyan courts as the accused fought to have the request thrown out.

However, this week Kenyan City Hall Chief Magistrate Teresia Muregi declined to block the extradition process.
