A PARTY drug which has been linked to a series of deaths in the UK could flood the streets of Jersey in the next year, health professionals have warned.
Methoxetamine – a former ‘legal high’ which last year became a class C substance in Jersey – is expected to be the next designer drug in the Jersey club scene.
Michael Gafoor, director of the States Alcohol and Drug Service, said that although the drug was already occasionally available on the streets of Jersey, it was likely to become a much bigger problem in the coming months.
Following serious concerns about its health effects, methoxetamine last year became the first drug in the UK to be banned temporarily under new government powers. It is now due to be upgraded to a class B in Jersey.
