’Tis the season for a goodwill gesture

From Brendan McDonald.
I CAN’T help feeling sorry for the new CEO at Jersey Post, Kevin Keen.

No sooner had he got his feet under the table than the fulfilment bombshell dropped in his lap and the prospect of competition looming in the new year won’t help matters.

However I think Jersey Post has a golden opportunity to win back the public who drifted away when the farcical two-tier system was introduced. I would respectfully suggest that Jersey Post cancel the two-tier system for the month of December and just have the standard rate of 37p as a gesture of goodwill.

The idea of two different rates during this period just does not make sense if you think about it. Jersey Post will employ a lot of temporary staff over Christmas and it would be insane to leave standard mail on the sorting office floor for three days when they have plenty of staff to deliver all the mail on the same day.

We are all aware of the chaos that follows two or three days of fog and no mail or newspapers get in to the airport. If that situation occurs, and it is more likely to in December, then the two-tier system is meaningless. It would make no sense at all to leave standard mail lying on the sorting office floor for three days when you have extra staff to take it out on delivery.

I hope Jersey Post will give my suggestion some thought and get back some credibility and public support. I would think that having one priced stamp for Christmas cards (37p) will hardly cause major disruption and it will make life a bit easier for the counter staff and the hard-working delivery officers (male and female).
