Zero-ten tax is nothing to crow about

Friday 30th December 2011, 3:00PM GMT.

From Alan Le Rossignol.
I CANNOT really appreciate why some politicians are crowing about the acceptance of the zero-ten tax system when clearly it continues to be morally repugnant.

What incentive is there for any local enterprise to compete when a similar business run from elsewhere contributes no tax directly to our economy?

The enemy is certainly within, when it comes to encouraging diversification and initiative in our presently skewed economy. Any Islander with roots here must feel aggrieved by this unfair tax system and also feel that it is shooting local initiatives in the foot.

This is not a transparently moral or equitable system and many Islanders hope that this can be corrected before we proudly raise up our heads and crow about it.

Is there not some embarrassment or pricking of conscience when promoting a tax system which penalises and disadvantages a domiciled Jersey business?

For genuine Jersey business enterprises this is a destructive policy. Jersey businesses are disappearing fast.

Absolutely right … a finance sector mono-economy is an exremely dangerous threat to our medium /long term security.
