Cheered to glory
Thursday 30th June 2011, 3:00PM BST.
FOUR more gold medals, in sports as diverse as archery, squash, swimming and shooting, have taken Team Jersey from fifth to third in the medals table.
Another host of silvers and bronzes has brought Jersey’s tally up to 56, comprising 13 golds, 24 silvers and 19 bronzes. But perhaps the biggest story of the day was Jersey’s volleyball team’s bid to reach the semi-finals of the men’s competition.
Two sets down to Cayman Islands, Jersey battled back in tremendous style to win 3-2 in front of an ecstatic audience.
But joy turned to agony later on when Cayman won 3-0 against the hosts to draw level with Jersey on points and squeeze past them by .1 on sets ratio.
Hitting the gold standard again were Nick Taylor in squash and David Ward in pistol shooting, both adding to a previous team success; Lucy O’Sullivan gaining revenge on Aalin George, the Isle of Man archer who pipped her to the FITA prize, by beating in the compound head-to-head; and Team Jersey’s first swimming gold of the games, a 100m freestyle relay title won by Emily Bashforth, Beth Cumming, Ebony Jacklin and Maria Kocot.
The team can expect a far busier time of it today, with one of the highlights sure to be the football team’s semi-final clash at Cowes against the Isle of Wight this afternoon.
With Guernsey playing Aland in the other semi a first-ever all-Channel Islands final is on the cards for tomorrow.
