JERSEY’S sporting stars outshone their CI rivals to win five and share one of the seven prizes on offer at last night’s Sportingbet Channel Islands Sports Personality Awards.

Jersey postman Thomas Greechan won the voter’s hearts and clinched the top Sports Personaltiy of the Year honour after an absolutely epic achievement.

The 35-year-old gave real meaning to the phrase ‘never underestimate the underdog’ as he came from the brink of defeat to win the World Champion of Champions bowls title in Hong Kong.

With 1,730 of the record 5,174 votes he beat off competition from England netballer, Jersey’s Serena Guthrie, in second place with 1,518 , a popular runner-up after she won bronze at the World Championships and gold at the World Netball Series and European Championships.

When did bowls become a sport?

He didn’t win the World Bowls Title….that’s on TV at the moment.

Surely it should have been Serena Guthrie. At least you have to be fit to play netball

His reaction to winning was rather OTT I thought. Do these ceremonies really matter in the scheme of things?

Further to Arthur Smith’s post, bowls is rather confusing, much like Triathlon for instance, in that there are so many different versions and different types of competitions, so nobody really knows who the best people are.

No, nothing to do with jealousy or sour grapes. My observation was that jumping up and shouting “C’MON!,or whatever you did was completely lacking in perspective, especially when it’s just a corporate mutual brown-nosing function masquarading as a sports award show.

And let’s face it, the fact that you beat Lee Merrien just shows how utterly ridiculous the whole event is.

Clearly not everyone thought so Bob as it was a public vote!!!!!!!

To Andy-i am only questionin whether bowls is a sport-as i would with darts, pool and snooker.

In my opinion and many others these are all pasttimes as opposed to sports.

A public vote is not the best way to choose the recipient as all a candidate has to do is to galvanise his own support base. It is more likely that someone from Jersey will win because Jersey has 1.5 times the number of inhabitants of Guernsey.
