Jersey find going tough in Bristol

JERSEY suffered their first defeat in five games on Sunday, losing 39 – 16 to a well-drilled Bristol.

Facing a tough task against a former Premiership side hailing from a traditional rugby city, Jersey didn’t help themselves, with centre Ashley Maggs red-carded for a dangerous tackle, and forwards Guy Thompson and David Felton both spending time in the sin-bin.

After a nervy start for both sides, with Bristol fly-half Adrian Jarvis missing a number of penalty opportunities, Bristol gradually built up pressure, with winger George Watkins scoring a try after 16 minutes. Two more tries were scored in the first-half, which finished 17-6.

The second-half didn’t get any better for Jersey, with an injury forcing Michael Le Bourgeois off the pitch on the 74th minute, although Richard Barrington scored a consolation try for Jersey in the dying minutes.

Queue a comment from the doom and gloom merchants. I was at the game and unfortunately the sending off was the turning point in the game. You can’t afford to be a man light at this level. Mind you the referee didnt help.

Looking forward to the Newcastle game now – perhaps Jersey can use this as motivation to put in a highly disciplined performance and limit a likely heavy defeat (and who knows, maybe surprise a few).
