Cycling’s golden girl back with new shuttle mission
Friday 11th January 2013, 2:00PM GMT.
TOP quality badminton will be played in Jersey this weekend – and Island Games cycling gold medallist Kim Ashton will be making a return to the sport for the first time in over a year.
The 25-year-old used to play badminton at senior level – and represented Jersey at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi – but she retired from the sport to concentrate on cycling.
Spurred on by a friend, who is visiting from the UK to participate in tonight and tomorrow’s Touchstone Jersey Senior Open, Ashton is dusting down her racket.
‘I last played competitively about 12 months ago at the last Jersey Open,’ she said. ‘My friend, Jon Hepworth, asked me if I’d play with him in the mixed doubles … I said yes and thought I’d enter the singles, too.’
The tournament, being held at the Gilson Hall, starts this evening at 6.30 pm with the men’s and ladies’ singles group stages.
